- Sell What You Don't Need- Before storing the goods, be sure you are storing only those items that you actually need. Do not pay for moving and storage unnecessarily for the useless items. You have several options of getting rid of things you no longer require:
- Charity Organization- Consider giving away your things to charity organizations. Remember to get a receipt if you give your goods to a charitable institute.
- Garage Sale- Holding a garage sale is good idea to earn some money and do away with the unwanted stuff. Purpose of the garage sale should not be profit but selling the goods. So, price the items accordingly. Some towns require you to have a permit to have a garage sale. Inform people in your neighborhood few days before the sale, by putting up a board. Choose a weekend to have the sale. Advertise the sale in local papers or put bulletin boards in local supermarkets.
- Local Markets - You could also consider selling your goods in local markets or at second hand stores.
- Online auctions- This is another way of getting away with the items you do not need and earning extra money. To buy or sell any goods you have to register with online auction sites. Add good quality photos of your goods to make sure that your goods are well presented. carry a research on the site for similar goods to find out the sale price.
- After you have decided which goods have to be stored, make a list of all packing supplies like tape, rope, pallets, wrap, marking pens, etc. List out the items to be stored and find out the correct size required for storage. In case you are using movers, inquire the size of truck that will be used so that you have an idea whether the truck would be accessible to the unit or not. Inform your mover at least 30 days in advance and understand the company policies and lease agreement.
- Never use plastic to cover your belongings as it retains moisture and may damage the good.
