(PRWEB) August 30, 2006 -- Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has written to the Institute to explain, and reiterate, her opposition earlier this year to the acquisition of US ports operations by Dubai Ports World.

DPW fended off opposition from PSA of Singapore to acquire the ports operations of P&O in February, paying US$6.8 billion. Operations at six US ports represented about 10 per cent of this, but it was here that DPW encountered the only serious objections to the move.

Senator Clinton, who represents New York, one of the six ports that featured in the deal, was one of the most outspoken critics. Her comments hit their mark: by 10 March, DPW felt obliged to announce it would sell on this portion of the P&O package. It started the process to do so immediately, although it is still ongoing.

"I will continue to work to strengthen our ports and do everything in my power to ensure there are no repeat attacks like the ones our state experienced on September 11, 2001, which means not only fighting for the necessary resources, but ensuring our ports are not turned over to foreign governments." said Senator Clinton
