(PRLEAP.COM) “Relearn” a valuable art in Civil Engineering. The American Society of Civil Engineers Continuing Education Committee is presenting the workshop “Success with Sketching: Hand Drawing and Sketching in Civil Engineering” on Saturday, Sept. 9, according to ASCE member, Bruce Roth of GAI Consultants, Inc.

This five-session workshop is dedicated to improving the graphic communication skills that will help civil engineers improve freeform and hand technical drawing skills. This technique was more commonly used in the past for civil engineers to quickly and effectively communicate technical information to a wide audience. However, with increasing technology, this skill is being frequently replaced by computer-aided drafting programs. This workshop will “re-introduce” the fundamentals of sketching useful in design, during field work, inspections, geotechnical reconnaissance and surveying.

“Success with Sketching” will be held at the Engineers Society of Western Pennsylvania located on 337 Fourth Ave. in Pittsburgh from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and includes a continental breakfast, lunch and refreshments. The cost is $125 for ASCE members and non-members; $40 for full-time students (identification required).

Workshop presenters include Andrew Rose, P.E., Ph.D. of University of Pittsburgh Johnstown; Jayson Livingston, ASLA, of GAI Consultants, Inc. in Homestead, Pa.; Sue Grant, lecturer and CAD instructor at Point Park University in Pittsburgh; James Hamel, P.E., P.G. Ph.D., consulting engineer with Hamel Geotechnical Consultants; Charles D. Atkins, P.E., private consulting engineer; and Joseph Elwell, surveyor with the Army Corps of Engineers.
